Beginner’s Guide

This guide is designed to help new users set up and run Refract efficiently for Target. It includes a recommended starting configuration, explains how cookies and Shape Security work, and provides answers to the most common setup and troubleshooting questions.

Beginner Setup

To reduce fingerprinting issues and avoid common mistakes, the following setup is recommended for all new users:

Configuration:

  • Use your local PC, not a server or RDP.

    • Note: As you will see later, the extension browser MUST remain visible/on-screen a tiny bit.

  • Use the Brave browser (offers reduced fingerprinting).

  • Run the Refract extension without proxies.

  • Create 2–3 tasks only at first, 1 task ONLY per unique account.

  • Set up a single product cookie harvester in Brave or Chrome.

  • Do not use proxies initially for tasks or extension.

  • Do not use multi-sku, run 1-3 single individual task groups to get started.

Once this configuration is running successfully, you can experiment with different setups.

Once you're comfortable with the beginner setup, consider expanding to this structure:

Tasks and Accounts:

  • Run a maximum of 10 tasks.

    • Only run one task per account per product.

  • Use 10 unique Target accounts.

  • Enable multi-SKU where applicable.

  • Run everything on a local PC only.

Harvesters:

  • Use 2 product cookie harvesters without proxies:

    • One on Chrome

    • One on Brave

  • Experiment with task and monitor delays.

    • Some users run as low as 1000, some as high as 4000. Need to experiment to find works best for you.

Important: This setup is not intended for use on servers. Server usage significantly increases the likelihood of Shape blocks due to common device fingerprints.

Understanding Target Cookies and Shape Security

What is Shape?

  • Shape is Target’s anti-bot security system. It evaluates each request and blocks automated behavior unless a valid session cookie is presented.

How Cookies Work:

  • Certain actions like login and add-to-cart (ATC) require a valid cookie.

  • The Refract extension generates and stores cookies used by tasks.

  • Cookies are consumed on each protected product cart request.

  • If a cookie fails (i.e., Shape Block), another cookie is used.

Why Cookies Get Depleted Quickly:

  • Every ATC attempt consumes a cookie.

  • If a request fails (Shape Block), it retries using another cookie.

  • For example, 20 tasks can consume 40+ cookies in seconds on a single restock if Shape blocks occur on first attempts.

Common Issues and Misconceptions

Shape Blocks Are Normal:

  • It is normal to experience a high percentage of Shape blocks, especially during periods of high site security or later in the day. Even experienced users encounter blocks regularly.

Accounts Do Not Affect Shape Blocks:

  • Shape operates based on device, browser, and IP trust levels. Target accounts have no impact on whether you get blocked.

Avoid Overreacting to Blocks:

  • Blocks are expected. Many users mistakenly believe their setup is failing when, in reality, they are experiencing typical behavior. Allow your device, proxies, and tasks time to rest, and try again later.

This includes critical extension setup details and frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions (Beginner-Focused)

What is the purpose of the extension?

  • It collects the cookies required to bypass Target's anti-bot system. It must remain active during botting.

Can I use the same proxies for the extension, tasks, and accounts?

  • Yes, although beginners are advised to avoid using proxies entirely until needed.

Do I need to log in often with the extension?

  • Sessions logged in via the extension can last days or weeks. Logging in from the accounts tab is not recommended and results in shorter sessions.

Why does the harvester say I’m logged out?

  • This is normal. The harvester is collecting cookies, not maintaining login sessions.

Do harvesters and tasks need to use the same proxies?

  • No. Harvesters and tasks can operate with different proxies or without them entirely.

Why are my cookies not increasing?

  • Either cookies are being used immediately by tasks, or the extension is not harvesting properly. Revisit the setup guide to confirm proper installation.

  • Note: By default, the extension will only harvest 3 cookies PER RUNNING TASK. If you have 3 tasks running, the extension will generate a max of 9 cookies.

Can I minimize the extension browser pop-up?

  • Yes, but you cannot hide or close the Target browser. The Target product page must remain running in a visible window, though only a small portion needs to show.

How do I run multiple extension instances?

  • Use different Chrome users or separate browsers (e.g., Chrome, Brave, Edge). Each must have its own extension instance running in a distinct profile.

Why am I getting “Shape Block”?

  • Try resting your tasks, changing proxies, or running locally. Avoid servers. This is not related to your Target accounts.

Why are items not being added to the cart in the harvester window?

  • This is expected. The harvester is not meant to cart products - its only role is to collect valid cookies.

Final Notes

  • Do not expect 100% success. Blocks and failed attempts are part of the process.

  • Start simple. Do not overcomplicate your setup early on.

  • Read all official guides and observe how others run their configurations before scaling.

  • When troubleshooting, focus on your device, browser, and proxies - not the accounts.
